How to buy from US sites with Canadian billing address
Hello,
I am attempting to purchase some items from Walmart.com as Walmart.ca doesn't offer what I'm looking for. There is no option for Paypal on the grocery side and it won't let me pay with my Canadian credit card. I have a US P.O box that I'm trying to get the items shipped to but I can't change the billing address to a Canadian one. Does anyone know of a way around this? Or should I look into getting a US credit card. Thanks!

Depends on the retailer
Many that have “a Cdn presence” don’t allow Cdns to buy & ship to Canada on their US websites
(It’s called protecting their Cdn Biz Model investment in stores here )
Others won’t let you use a Cdn Financial Credit Card
Or ship to a PO Box
Or ship to a US Parcel Drop ... or Forwarding Service
All for the same reasons
So even if you had a US Funds CC (issued by a Cdn Bank)
Or a full on US CC (issued by a US Bank)
You may very well run into this issue no matter what
One work around is to enroll in a US Shop & Ship Program
They shop & forward the item to you
But there are costs to that
Sometimes it adds up to being too prohibitive / expensive to make it worthwhile
Cuz you literally are paying for a personal shopper ... be that online or in store
Your best bet for US Shopping these companies is to do it in person
(Actually that’s almost always the cheapest alternative for US Shopping)
But sadly ... with the Border closed it’s not much of an option right now

Most Canadian credit cards let you add a "secondary address." Your statements will still be sent to the primary address but when a merchant validates a transaction using the secondary address the CC will recognize it. I have the US address of an Amerifriend on many of my cards for this purpose.
This technique often, but not always, works for me. Sometimes I have to do everything through a VPN using a a US IP.
Or should I look into getting a US credit card.
Some merchants and their CC processors are very finicky. If the above techniques don't work then, yes you'll need a US-based CC.

I did the secondary address on my Canadian credit card for US purchases without issues. I used my Aunt/Uncles Florida address at the time as the secondary. It's been a few years since I bought anything again but at the time it worked.

Yes, so have I. But nevertheless there are still some sites (Lenovo US as I recall) that won't accept a Canadian CC, even something like TD/CT's US$ Visa, simply because the card has a Canadian CC number. In those situations you'd need a bona fide US CC.
There are also some merchants that won't ship to a PO Box, especially if the address is on their list of mail forwarders. Their concern isn't so much that it's a Canadian trying to get a better price but rather that mail forwarding services are used by fraudsters to pick up goods they ordered using stolen CCs. I've even had a merchant refuse to ship to a US hotel (where I had a reservation) for that reason.

Try this: take the #s in your postal code, add a 00 or 01 to the end. Use Google to find a corresponding USA address for the 5 digit zip code.
For example: M6M 3V5 = 63501 = Missouri. Find a physical address in Missouri that matches the zip and use that as your billing address.

THIS. I use this method to create a working US billing address all the time.

Huh, interesting. I've only ever used this tactic at US gas pumps, but I may try it also online. Thanks.

Get AMEX and tell them to change your billing address in US at your friend place and setup on portal for e-statement only.
I have that for more than 10 years now.

There's no need to change the main billing address and then worry about snail mail delays or going astray. Just add your Amerifriend's US address as a "secondary" address. It will be recognized by CC processors as valid billing or shipping or both. Your main address can then be your regular Canadian address. See my post upthread.
(I've been doing that for at least 10 years without any problems.)

Old thread, I know, but this came up in a google search as I was trying to checkout at walmart.com. Capital One wouldn't let me add a US address, so I tried the zipcode trick mentioned here. It worked!

THANK YOU! Old thread, I know, but in case it helps anyone: This worked for me on a site that only allows US billing addresses and that was rejecting all the Canadian credit cards I was trying to pay with (I tried on multiple cards with my Canadian address but put "non-US" for state and ###00 for zip code).
What worked: I did the ###01 version of my postal code since the ###00 version isn't a valid US zip code and didn't seem to be working. It ended up being somewhere in Iowa, so I found an address in that town and used it as my "billing address."
NOTE: This trick did NOT work on an RBC credit card but it DID work on a TD card.

What TD card did it work on?

Honestly …
Not sure HOW this even possible
Some fairly random Zip Code
Where CANADA A1B 2C3 … becomes 12301 vs 12300 … which is the norm trick for US billing purposes
Plus …
A street address … not related in any way familiar to the one you actually live at
For BILLING PURPOSES
Where … name, street address, country, and postal code
Are SUPPOSED TO MATCH UP TO WHATS ON FILE FOR THE CC being charged
Beyond strange

yeah, I've been using a similar approach for a few years now with a few large retailers in the US like home depot, best buy or target and I was surprised it worked. there was one time it didn't work with a smaller retailer and the retailer cancelled my order themselves. Maybe US CC processors are less stringent?

Not sure why it works but I'm glad it does because I used this trick to add my Canadian credit card to my USA PayPal accounts.
