BRAZIL — Emergence of native population identity and rights: An Indigenous woman attends the annual Free Earth camp on April 8, 2025, where Brazil’s Indigenous communities discuss rights, territorial protection and their role in COP30, which will take place in November for the first time in the Amazon of Brasilia, Brazil. Thousands of Indigenous people marched in Brazil’s capital, demanding that the state guarantee and expand their rights to traditional lands as part of the solution to the world’s climate crisis.

Leaders and members of the Indigenous community plan to attend COP30, hoping for the chance to promote land demarcation and to secure other Indigenous rights in all Amazon countries. They are also pressing for a greater role during the event.

SALT LAKE CITY — Mourning loss of Brooklyn-born, first Black Republican Congresswoman, who succumbed to brain cancer at 49: Marie Bourdeau, left, attends the memorial service of her daughter, former U.S. Rep. A daughter of Haitian immigrants, Rep. Love was born in Brooklyn in 1975, a year after her parents fled the Duvalier regime in Haiti. Not a fan of President Donald Trump during his first term, she rebuked him for his disparaging comments about Haiti and Haitians.

LONDON — Seeking government protection,for old times’ sake’: Prince Harry gestures as he arrives at the High Court in England, April 8, 2025. The Duke of Sussex seeks to win back his government-funded protection in an appeals case after losing his court fight last year. His attorney on Tuesday told appeals court judges that Prince Harry had been treated unfairly since February 2020, when his bodyguard detail was revoked after he resigned from being a working member of the British Royal Family and moved to the United States.

Prince Harry’s attorneys assert that the government panel’s decision to give the Dukebespokesecurity, customized for an as-needed basis, demonstrated it had failed to follow its own policy and to complete a needs assessment.

Trump singled out several Dodgers for their achievements last season and praised Ohtani in particular for becoming baseball’s first 50 home run-50 stolen base player. Ohtani made his major league debut in 2018.

GREECE — Are the window rooms here the popular ones? The Monastery of Holy Trinity is pictured on a rock high above the city of Meteora, April 8, 2025. The monastery dates back to 1488, and its creation is credited to a monk named Dometios. Some sources, however, date the monastery even earlier, to 1362.

Visitors wishing to access the monastery must cross a pedestrian path downhill until the foot of the cliff and then climb 145 carved steps. The Meteora rock formation is in Trikala, Thessaly.

SANTO DOMINGO — Collapse leads to catastrophe: Rescue workers carry a person pulled from the wreckage of the Jet Set nightclub after its roof collapsed during a merengue concert in the Dominican Republic in the early hours of April 8, 2025. As of that afternoon, the death count had risen to at least 44 people, with 160 others injured.

Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, told reporters,We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble.”

The Florida Gators won the NCAA championship title game against the University of Houston Cougars 65-63 in what fans and sportswriters called athriller.”

The victory gives Florida its third NCAA title. The Gators last won the title in consecutive years, 2006 and 2007, beating UCLA and Ohio State, respectively.
